Britain's Century-Old Railway Unveils Hydrogen-Powered Locomotive, Giving Old Diesel Cars a New Life

Mar 13, 2026

The Severn Valley Railway (SVR) has unveiled the "HydroShunter," a hydrogen-powered shunting locomotive converted from a decommissioned Class 08 locomotive.

Manufactured in Derby in 1959, this locomotive was originally intended for spare parts and nearly ended up in a scrapyard, but has now been given a new lease on life at this tourist attraction.

The conversion was a collaboration with Vanguard Sustainable Transport Solutions, a company focused on promoting hydrogen energy in the rail sector, located in central England.

The conversion was carried out at SVR's maintenance facility in Kidderminster, by railway engineers, company engineers, and apprentices.

In the driver's cab, the only changes are the addition of a few indicator lights and instruments.

SVR driver Bob Dunn stated, "When you pull the throttle, the locomotive starts moving, and it doesn't get louder like a diesel engine because it doesn't have a diesel engine. But in terms of the feel of power handling, it's almost exactly the same as a diesel-electric shunting locomotive."

This locomotive will continue to be used for its original purpose—shunting operations—and has already made its official debut at Kidminster station.

The tourist rail line is 16 miles long, connecting the town of Worcestershire with Bridgnorth in Shropshire.

Vanguard engineer Callum Nicolson explained that the space where the diesel engine used to be has been replaced by a hydrogen power system.

He said, "This includes a large traction battery and a hydrogen fuel cell. The fuel cell charges the battery and powers the existing electric motor."

Gus Dunster, managing director of the century-old railroad, stated that the line currently operates steam and diesel locomotives, "which are essentially still running on fossil fuels." However, he added, "This railroad is also a guardian of the rural environment for 16 miles, and there are many ways we can take to offset these carbon emissions. For example, we have some large buildings and are currently preparing to launch a project to install solar panels on these buildings."

SVR stated that invited guests—including representatives from the mainline railroad company—learned about the vision for decarbonizing rail locomotives and "the potential for retrofitting shunting operations nationwide" at the event.

Dr. Alexander Burrows, CEO of Vanguard Sustainable Transport Solutions, said, "We already have many potential customers who have expressed strong interest in achieving zero emissions, reducing noise, and improving operating costs through retrofitting solutions."
